St. Pete Beach Family Photos: What to Know

Gulf sunsets, soft sand and a historic beach town at the southern tip. Here is how to plan a beach session that actually works for your family.

Is St. Pete Beach good for family photos?

St. Pete Beach is one of the best places in Tampa Bay for family photos. It is a narrow barrier island with the Gulf of Mexico to the west, so the sun sets over the water. Book the last hour before sunset for soft, warm light, and consider Pass-a-Grille at the southern tip for a historic beach-town feel.

Beach sessions give you open space, gentle backlight and a backdrop that never goes out of style. They also bring wind, bright sand and tide-pool distractions. With a little planning, all of that works in your favor.

Below is what I tell families planning a session here, from timing and parking to dunes, outfits and keeping kids happy on the sand.

St. Pete Beach vs. St. Petersburg

Families often mix these up. St. Pete Beach is its own city in Pinellas County, separate from St. Petersburg. It had 8,879 residents in the 2020 Census and was formed from Pass-a-Grille, Belle Vista, St. Petersburg Beach and unincorporated land. It sits on a barrier island with Boca Ciega Bay on the east side.

St. Petersburg, across the bay, has waterfront parks like Vinoy Park and the St. Pete Pier facing Tampa Bay to the east. If you want city parks, gardens or a sunrise over the water, St. Petersburg family portraits might suit you better. If you want sand and a sunset over open water, St. Pete Beach is the pick.

St. Pete Beach is also different from the Hillsborough side of the bay. Instead of a bay view with the skyline behind, you get open Gulf water to the horizon, which keeps the background clean and timeless.

The light: why sunset is the sweet spot

Because the beach faces west over the Gulf, the hour before sunset puts the sun behind you and the water. That backlight creates glowing hair, soft skin and that golden haze families love. It also means nobody is squinting straight into the sun.

Midday is the hardest time on any Florida beach. Light bounces off the sand, shadows fall under eyes and kids get overheated fast. Morning works too, with cooler sand and calmer crowds, but the light is flatter on this side of the island.

Sunset times shift through the year, so we set your start time once your date is chosen. The goal is to begin about an hour before the sun touches the water, which gives us golden light for the family portraits and a little color afterward.

  • Best: the last hour before sunset, with the sun behind you
  • Good: early morning for cooler sand and fewer people
  • Avoid: midday, when sand glare and heat are strongest
  • Watch the clouds: a few clouds often make sunset color richer

Pass-a-Grille: the historic southern tip

Pass-a-Grille sits at the southern end of St. Pete Beach. The Pass-a-Grille Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1989 and expanded in 2003, and it includes the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum. The historic buildings and beachfront give a session two looks in one place: sand at the water's edge and a classic beach-town backdrop a short walk away.

Parking is metered. A Florida travel guide reports pay-station street parking along Gulf Way and Pass-a-Grille Way from 8 am to 8 pm, with limited parking on the side streets reserved for residents. Rates change, so give yourself extra time to park, especially on weekends and holidays.

Pick a single meeting point, like a specific beach access, and share it with everyone in your group. On busy evenings, that one detail saves a lot of time spent searching for each other along the sand.

Dunes, sea oats and beach rules

Dunes look beautiful in photos, but they are off limits. Florida law makes it unlawful to cut, harvest or remove sea oats or sea grapes from public land, because they hold the sand in place and protect against erosion. I keep families on the open beach and use the dunes only as a background from a respectful distance.

As for photography rules, St. Pete Beach considered an ordinance in 2026 that would require permits for beach businesses using changing tents, lighting setups and other large structures. Local news reported that photographers using only handheld equipment would not need to register, and that the first reading was tabled in June 2026 for more community feedback. Check the current status before your date.

If you are considering other Pinellas beaches, Pinellas County's film guidelines say family and group portraits generally do not need a permit when the camera is handheld or on a tripod, traffic is not blocked and there are no large lighting setups.

What to wear for St. Pete Beach family photos

Beach light loves soft, airy colors. Cream, sand, dusty blue, light denim, sage and blush all glow at sunset. A touch of deeper color, like navy or terracotta, keeps the group grounded. Avoid head-to-toe bright white if the sun is still strong, and skip neon colors, which reflect onto skin.

Choose fabrics that move. Linen, cotton and flowy dresses look lovely in a Gulf breeze, while stiff fabrics can puff up awkwardly. Most families go barefoot on the sand, so bring sandals for the walk and a towel for sandy feet. My guide on what to wear for family pictures in Tampa goes deeper on palettes.

Hair matters on the beach too. A Gulf breeze can blow long hair across faces, so bring a few clips or a soft tie. I also watch the wind direction and angle families so it blows hair back rather than forward.

Keeping kids happy on the sand

Beaches are the most fun location for kids, and also the most distracting. Shells, waves and sandcastles compete with the camera, so I build that play into the session instead of fighting it.

We usually start with the full family portrait while everyone is clean and dry, then let the kids chase the shoreline, dig or splash a little at the end. Some of the most joyful images come from that last stretch, with wet toes and wind-blown hair.

A few small things help a lot. Bring water, a snack and a towel. Apply sunscreen well before the session so it has time to soak in and does not leave a shine. If you are bringing an extended family group, choose one meeting point near a beach access, so everyone finds each other quickly.

Planning your beach session

Outdoor sessions include one location within 30 miles of Tampa, so ask about travel to St. Pete Beach when you inquire. Closer beach options include Apollo Beach family photos on the Hillsborough side, and families farther north often look at Clearwater family portraits.

Summer storms are common from late May into October, typically in the late afternoon and evening, which is right when beach sessions happen. If the weather turns, you can reschedule free or move into the studio. As a Tampa family photographer, I help you pick the right beach, date and outfits. When you are ready, book your beach session.

Frequently asked questions

No. St. Pete Beach is a separate city on a barrier island in Pinellas County, with 8,879 residents in the 2020 Census. St. Petersburg is the larger city on the mainland. St. Pete Beach faces the Gulf for sunsets, while St. Petersburg's downtown waterfront faces Tampa Bay to the east.

The last hour before sunset is the favorite. The beach faces west over the Gulf, so the sun sits behind your family and creates soft, glowing backlight without squinting. Early morning also works for cooler sand and fewer people, though the light is flatter.

In 2026 the city considered an ordinance requiring permits for beach businesses with tents, lighting and large setups. News reports said handheld photography would not need registration, and the first reading was tabled in June 2026. Rules can change, so it is worth checking the city's current status before a session.

No. Florida law makes it unlawful to cut, harvest or remove sea oats or sea grapes on public land, and dunes protect the beach from erosion. Families stay on the open sand, and the dunes can still appear softly in the background from a respectful distance.

Pass-a-Grille has metered street parking on Gulf Way and Pass-a-Grille Way, with pay stations from 8 am to 8 pm according to a Florida travel guide. Many side streets are limited to residents. Arrive early on weekends and holidays, since sunset is the busiest time to find a space.

Soft, light colors glow at sunset: cream, sand, light denim, dusty blue, sage and blush. Add one deeper tone like navy or terracotta for balance. Avoid neon colors, which cast onto skin, and very bright white in strong sun. Flowy fabrics look best in the Gulf breeze.
