Plant City Family Photographer
Family portraits with small-town character, from the brick storefronts of historic downtown to the wide reservoir at Edward Medard Park.

Plant City has a way of feeling like a hometown even to people who just moved here. It's the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, home to 39,764 residents at the 2020 census, and a place where brick storefronts, a 1909 railroad depot and open farm country all sit within a short drive. Those are the backdrops I love to photograph families against.
I'm Mallary Denson, the family photographer Tampa families recommend to friends, with a studio in New Tampa, and I welcome Plant City families for sessions out east or in my studio. Every session is guided, relaxed and built around your kids' rhythms, with a styling guide before we meet and a private online gallery about two to three weeks after. If reviews help you decide, mine sit at 5.0 stars on Google from 143 families and clients, and Best Tampa Photographers ranked me their No. 1 family photographer in Tampa for 2027.
Strawberry Season and Your Family Calendar
In Plant City, the calendar revolves around berries. The Florida Strawberry Festival, started by the Plant City Lions Club in 1930, runs for eleven days each late winter and draws visitors from all over Central Florida. For a lot of local families, that's the season to update portraits: the weather is cool, kids are rosy-cheeked, and the fields are full.
Fall is the other natural window. Holiday portraits run October through December, and those dates fill quickly. If you'd like a December session for cards, my post on how far ahead to book a family photographer lays out the timing.
Family Photographer Plant City
If you're looking for a Plant City family photographer, here's how it works. We start with a quick planning call about who's coming, ages, outfits and where you'd like to shoot. Because Plant City is farther east than most of the areas I serve, please ask about travel to Plant City when you reach out. If you'd rather skip the drive question entirely, studio family portraits in New Tampa are always an option.
Collections are $400 for 5 edited images in one hour, $650 for 10 images over 90 minutes, and $1,150 for 20 images over two hours. Additional edited images run $50 apiece. Booking takes a 50% deposit, and every family receives my styling guide so outfits come together without stress.
For three-generation gatherings, my extended family sessions are designed for bigger groups and longer timelines.

Brick Streets, Railroad History and Reservoir Views
Plant City offers two very different looks for family photos. Downtown has the brick facades of the Downtown Plant City Commercial District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the 1909 Union Depot at Palmer and Drane streets. Out south, Edward Medard Conservation Park and Alderman's Ford trade architecture for big water, cypress and oak.
Edward Medard is a particular favorite for families with energetic kids. The county park surrounds a reservoir of roughly 700 acres, with a boardwalk and observation platform reaching out over the water and a three-mile trail along the shore. Little ones can watch for birds from the boardwalk while I work in the background, and the open water reflects the evening sky so beautifully that even simple portraits feel cinematic.
I'll match the setting to your style. Downtown is great for families who like a classic, editorial feel; the parks suit families who want trees, grass and room for kids to wander. A note for large groups: in Hillsborough County parks and conservation areas, a film permit is only waived for five people or fewer, photographer included, with no props.
Walden Lake to Dover: Getting to Your Session
Plant City sits between Brandon and Lakeland along Interstate 4, which serves the city at exits 17 through 25. U.S. 92 runs through the center of town and State Road 39 crosses it right at the heart of downtown. From my New Tampa studio, the drive is about 35 to 40 minutes using I-75 and I-4, depending on traffic.
Local families come from Walden Lake, a 2,000-acre master-planned community, from Country Hills and Oakwood Estates, and from the historic residential districts near downtown. Nearby communities like Dover, Turkey Creek, Springhead and Knights round out the area, all served by ZIP codes 33563 through 33567.
If you're closer to Tampa or Polk County, take a look at my guides for a Brandon family photographer, a Lakeland family photographer session, or Valrico family photography.
A Town Named for a Railroad Man
Plant City was incorporated as a town on January 10, 1885, and became the City of Plant City in 1911. It was named for railroad developer Henry B. Plant, not for the area's plant nurseries, though plenty of people still assume otherwise. The Union Depot opened in 1909 and now houses the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum, opened in 2013.
Those railroad roots still shape the town's best backdrops. The depot at Palmer and Drane streets has been on the National Register since 1975, and its brick and trim give families history in one frame, with the storefronts of the downtown commercial district close by for a second look.
Golden Light Over the Fields
Plant City's open land and big skies make golden hour especially lovely. In summer, we shoot the last hour before sunset to avoid the heat; in winter, the sun sets earlier and the light stays soft longer. Either way, I keep sessions moving with walking shots, piggyback rides and sibling games so the candid moments flow naturally.
For outfits, earthy tones like cream, olive, denim and a touch of berry red look right at home here. My post on what to wear for family pictures has full color palettes. If rain moves in, you can reschedule free or come into the studio. When you're ready, book your Plant City family session or send me a note to ask about travel.
Favorite family photo spots in Plant City
Historic Downtown Plant City
Brick storefronts in a National Register commercial district and the 1909 Union Depot at Palmer and Drane streets. A favorite spot for classic, editorial-style family portraits.
McCall Park
A downtown green that hosts many city events, dedicated in 1971 and expanded in 1998. Easy to pair with a stroll past the historic storefronts.
Edward Medard Conservation Park
A large reservoir with a boardwalk, observation platform and 3-mile trail on Turkey Creek Road. Entry is $2 per vehicle, and the open water gives a calm, wide backdrop.
Alderman's Ford Conservation Park
A 1.9-mile paved loop along both prongs of the Alafia River, with boardwalks under towering cypress and oak. Works beautifully for shady, woodland family photos.
Ellis-Methvin Park
A 46-acre city park with a 0.4-mile walking trail around a pond. Good for quick, easy sessions with toddlers.

Plant City family photography FAQs
Yes, the exterior makes a great backdrop. Plant City Union Depot opened in 1909 at Palmer and Drane streets, has been on the National Register since 1975 and became the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum in 2013. Its brick and trim pair well with the storefronts of the historic downtown commercial district.
It can be. The Florida Strawberry Festival began in 1930 with the Plant City Lions Club and runs 11 days each late winter. Red, cream and denim outfits nod to the season. The brick storefronts of downtown Plant City make that palette feel right at home.
McCall Park, a downtown green dedicated in 1971 and expanded in 1998, hosts many city events and sits near the historic storefronts. We can shoot a few city-style family portraits on the sidewalks, then let the kids burn off energy on the grass for laughing, candid frames.
Six of you plus me makes seven, which is over Hillsborough County's five-person no-permit limit, so a county permit would be needed. The park is worth it: a reservoir of about 700 acres with a boardwalk, observation platform and 3-mile trail. Vehicle entry is $2 for up to 8 people.
Head to Alderman's Ford Conservation Park near Plant City. Its trail follows the north and south prongs of the Alafia River over footbridges, and huge cypress and oak trees shade the boardwalk. Because the path is paved, wagons and strollers roll easily. Bring $2 for the vehicle gate, and keep the group to five with me to skip a county permit.
Ellis-Methvin Park is a 46-acre city park with a 0.4-mile walking trail around a pond. The short loop keeps grandparents close to the car, and the pond gives a calm water backdrop for a three-generation portrait. My extended family session page explains how I organize bigger groups.
Plant City sits approximately 35 to 40 minutes from New Tampa, roughly 30 miles via I-75 and I-4. Since it is on the edge of my area, ask about travel to Plant City when you reach out, and I'll confirm before you book. Collections and inclusions are on my family session pricing page.
The brick storefronts of Plant City's National Register commercial district love navy, cream, mustard and olive. Avoid bright red, which can blend into the brick. Mix one pattern with solids and add a texture like knit or denim. Every booked family gets a styling guide, plus my outfit guide.
Holiday portraits run October through December, so Walden Lake families should plan by early fall. Downtown Plant City adds a classic small-town feel to a card photo, while the New Tampa studio guarantees a clean look regardless of weather. If rain hits an outdoor date, we reschedule free or move inside.
Plant City was incorporated as a town on January 10, 1885, and named for railroad developer Henry B. Plant. That railroad history still shows downtown at the 1909 Union Depot, which makes a meaningful backdrop for families with deep Plant City roots or grandparents who remember the trains.
Either can be close. Interstate 4 runs through Plant City from about exit 17 to exit 25, so most families are a short drive from downtown's brick storefronts or Ellis-Methvin Park, a 46-acre city park with a 0.4-mile walking trail around a pond. I'll suggest whichever keeps your drive short, so kids arrive rested and dressed rather than restless from the car.
