Valrico Family Photographer

Warm, unhurried family portraits for Valrico, the rich valley east of Brandon, with spring-fed water and river trails just down the road.

Valrico family photographer

Valrico means rich valley in Spanish, a name the area took in the 1880s after decades as a farming settlement called Long Pond. These days the riches are a little different: good schools, tree-lined subdivisions and parks where kids ride bikes until the streetlights come on. With 37,895 residents at the 2020 census, Valrico is big enough to have everything and small enough to feel like a neighborhood.

I'm Mallary Denson, a Tampa family photographer working from a studio in New Tampa, and Valrico family photography is a happy part of my calendar. My sessions are guided and relaxed, every family gets a styling guide, and your fully edited gallery arrives in two to three weeks. For a little reassurance, 143 Google reviewers have given my work an average of 5.0 stars, and the 2026 list from 10 Best Photographers named me Tampa's Best Family Photographer.

School Years, Sports Seasons and Family Photos

Valrico families live by the school calendar. Between Valrico Elementary, middle schools like Burns, Randall, Mulrennan and Barrington, and high schools such as Bloomingdale, Durant and Newsome, there's always a game, a concert or a project due. Family photos often get pushed to next year, and next year arrives fast.

That's why I keep the process light. A one-hour session with 5 edited images, at $400, is enough to capture everyone, including the teenager who'd rather be anywhere else. For families who want a fuller story, the $650 collection includes 10 images over 90 minutes and the $1,150 collection includes 20 images over two hours. Extra edited images are $50 each, and a 50% deposit locks in your date.

Sports seasons are worth planning around, too. A session squeezed between Saturday games and Sunday plans tends to feel rushed, so I'll suggest an evening that gives everyone a chance to arrive calm, dressed and fed. That small bit of planning shows up in every frame.

Family Photographer Valrico

Choosing a Valrico family photographer comes down to trust and ease. I plan everything with you ahead of time, from location to outfits, and during the session I guide posing so parents never have to direct the kids. The candid moments, a sibling tickle fight or a grandparent's proud grin, happen naturally once everyone relaxes.

My outdoor family sessions include one location within 30 miles of Tampa, and Valrico, about 14 miles east of the city along SR 60, sits comfortably within that range. Prefer clean backdrops and no weather worries? Studio portraits in New Tampa are always available. Planning a reunion? My extended family sessions are made for big groups.

Valrico's Best Backdrops: Parks, Springs and River Trails

Valrico has several county parks right in its neighborhoods, and the Alafia River's springs and preserves are just south in Lithia. That gives families a choice between a quick, close-to-home session and a scenic outing with water and cypress. I'll help you choose based on the light, your kids' ages and how far everyone wants to walk.

For a close-to-home session, Stearns Road Park and Buckhorn Park both have walking trails and open fields, so kids can run while I work around them. For something more scenic, Lithia Springs offers clear, spring-fed water and shade, and Alderman's Ford has boardwalks under towering cypress. Both are a short drive south and well worth the extra minutes for the variety of backdrops they give your gallery.

One planning note: Hillsborough County's film guidelines only waive a permit in county parks and conservation areas for five people or fewer, photographer included, with no props. They also don't apply to playgrounds, shelters or athletic facilities. Larger family groups will need a permit outdoors or can gather in the studio.

Lithia Springs Conservation Park

A 160-acre park built around a natural spring that stays 72 degrees year-round, with shade trees and a big grassy area. A favorite spot for fresh, green family portraits.

Alderman's Ford Conservation Park

A 1.9-mile paved loop along both prongs of the Alafia River, with boardwalks under cypress and oak. Parking is $2 per vehicle.

Stearns Road Park

A county park in Valrico with a paved walking trail and open field. Works beautifully for simple, close-to-home sessions with lots of room to run.

Buckhorn Park

Walking trails and an open field on Green Valley Street, with a disc golf course we keep out of frame. Great for relaxed, playful family photos.

Alafia River State Park

Hilly trails on a reclaimed phosphate mine in Lithia, with forest and flatwoods. Entry is $5 per vehicle.

Around Valrico: Neighborhoods, Roads and Drive Times

Valrico covers about 14 square miles and borders Brandon to the west, Bloomingdale to the southwest and FishHawk to the south. State Road 60 carries most traffic east and west, while Lithia Pinecrest Road, Bloomingdale Avenue, Valrico Road and Miller Road connect the neighborhoods. Families reach my New Tampa studio in about 35 minutes via SR 60 and I-75, depending on traffic.

Neighborhoods in and around Valrico include River Hills Country Club, the Buckhorn subdivisions, Bloomingdale, Diamond Hill, Valrico Lake, Lakes of Valrico and Valri Forest. ZIP codes are 33594, 33595 and 33596.

From Long Pond to Rich Valley

Before the Civil War, this area was known as Long Pond and home to cotton plantations. In the 1880s, it was renamed Valrico when William G. Tousey, a philosophy professor at Tufts College, purchased property here. The railroad arrived in 1890, but a major freeze in 1895 and the stock market crash of 1929 slowed growth for decades.

Valrico didn't really begin to grow again until the mid-1950s, when better roads connected it to Tampa. Today it's one of the established communities of east Hillsborough, and the portraits families make here add a new page to a long local story.

Light, Weather and Holiday Timing

Holiday portraits run October through December, and those weekend golden hour slots fill early. In fall, the light in Valrico's parks turns soft and warm by late afternoon, which is ideal for younger kids who can't stay up for a late sunset. In summer, we shoot the last hour before sunset to stay cooler.

If rain or storms move in, you can reschedule for free or move the session into my studio. For outfit ideas, read what to wear for family pictures in Tampa, and for more location inspiration, see the best places for family pictures in Tampa. When you're ready, book your Valrico family session.

Valrico family photography FAQs

Valrico means rich valley in Spanish. The area was known as Long Pond before the Civil War and took the name Valrico in the 1880s. It sits about 14 miles east of Tampa via SR 60, which makes it an easy outdoor session area for families across eastern Hillsborough.

Yes. Stearns Road Park has a paved walking trail and an open field, open sunrise to sunset. Toddlers can run on the field while I capture candid moments, and the paved trail is easy for strollers. Small groups of five or fewer, photographer included, need no county film permit.

Yes. Buckhorn Park has walking trails, an open field and a disc golf course. We stay away from active disc golf holes and use the field and trail edges for portraits. Small groups of five or fewer need no Hillsborough County film permit if there are no props.

Lithia Springs Conservation Park is my answer for the hot months. The water at its spring holds at 72 degrees year-round, and the park adds shade trees plus a big grassy area for running. Valrico kids can dip their toes after we finish the posed portraits. Bring $2 for vehicle entry.

Grandparents who use a cane or walker do well at Alderman's Ford Conservation Park. Its loop is paved, and although it runs 1.9 miles beside both prongs of the Alafia River, we only need the first stretch to reach a footbridge framed by cypress. That keeps the walk short for Valrico grandparents and leaves energy for smiles.

Not for climbers. Alafia River State Park was once a phosphate mine, and that reclaimed land now holds some of the steepest hills around, with trails through forest and flatwoods. Bring sneakers for the walk and change into nicer shoes for portraits. A $5 vehicle fee covers 2 to 8 people, and gates close at sundown.

Yes. Valrico is about 14 miles east of Tampa via SR 60, within the 30 miles included in an outdoor session. That covers parks like Stearns Road Park and Buckhorn Park. See my family session pricing page for collections.

Yes. Holiday portraits run October through December, and the New Tampa studio is approximately 35 minutes from Valrico via I-75 and SR 60. The studio guarantees a clean, weather-proof backdrop for cards. Outdoor sessions at local parks are lovely too.

Let teens pick their own pieces within a shared palette, such as denim, olive and cream, which look great against the open field at Stearns Road Park. Avoid large logos. My family outfit guide has more ideas.

Valrico borders Brandon, Bloomingdale and FishHawk, so it is a natural meeting point. Groups over five need a Hillsborough County permit at county parks, so for a large group, ask about the studio or see extended family sessions for options.

Golden hour, the hour before sunset, gives the softest light on open fields at Buckhorn Park and Stearns Road Park. In summer, afternoon storms are common, so if weather cancels us, rescheduling is free or we move into the studio.
