South Tampa sits on the Interbay Peninsula, with Hillsborough Bay on one side and Old Tampa Bay on the other. That geography gives South Tampa family photography something most of the county can't offer: open water within a few minutes of almost every front door. I use it for wide, airy frames where toddlers can run toward the camera and older siblings can sit on a seawall without anyone fussing over posing.

Inland, the historic blocks of Hyde Park give the opposite mood. Brick streets, deep porches and old oaks make warm, textured backdrops for candid moments, like a dad swinging a preschooler or a grandmother holding hands with three grandkids on a sidewalk. From Davis Islands to Port Tampa: Getting to Your Session

South Tampa covers ZIP codes 33606, 33608, 33609, 33611, 33616, 33621 and 33629, from Kennedy Boulevard down to MacDill Air Force Base. I photograph families from Palma Ceia and Bayshore Beautiful, Virginia Park, Ballast Point, Davis Islands and Port Tampa, and the drive down from my New Tampa studio is roughly 30 to 40 minutes on I-275, depending on traffic.

Dale Mabry Highway, Bay to Bay Boulevard and Gandy Boulevard are the main corridors, so I usually pick a spot that keeps your family close to home. Fewer minutes in the car means fewer meltdowns before the first frame. Every outdoor session includes one location within 30 miles of Tampa, which covers all of South Tampa easily. If you'd rather stay indoors, a studio portrait session is always an option.

A Little South Tampa History Behind Your Photos

Part of why South Tampa photographs so well is that it was built with care a century ago. The Hyde Park Historic District covers about 367 acres, with homes and buildings dating from 1886 to 1933. Davis Islands was created in the 1920s by D.P. Davis, dredged up from two small keys at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, and it won a first prize from the American Association of City Planners in 1927.

Ballast Point Park started in the 1890s as Jules Verne Park, a trolley stop, before taking its current name in 1903. And every January the Gasparilla Children's Parade rolls down Bayshore Boulevard, a week before the main pirate parade. If your family has a beaded-necklace tradition, bring it. Golden Hour, Bay Breezes and the Holiday Rush

Along Bayshore, the water faces east, so mornings give soft, even light on faces and evenings bring a pastel glow over the bay behind you. Picnic Island looks west across Old Tampa Bay, which makes it the better choice for a true sunset family session.

Summer afternoons in South Tampa often bring storms, so I schedule warm-month sessions early or close to golden hour. If rain hits, you can reschedule free or move into the studio.
