Clearwater Family Photographer
White sand for the kids, shady oaks for the grandparents, and sunsets for everyone. Family portraits made for real Clearwater life.

Clearwater is a city of two moods. Out on the barrier islands you have Gulf sand and wide sunsets, and on the mainland you have oak-shaded nature parks and a brand-new bayfront park on the bluff downtown. I'm Mallary Denson, the family photographer Tampa parents trust, with a studio in New Tampa, and I love that one Clearwater session can feel beachy, woodsy or polished depending on where we meet.
I keep family sessions playful and loose. Kids get room to explore, parents get gentle direction, and grandparents get a seat between groupings. The result is a mix of candid moments and frame-worthy family photos you will actually want on the wall, not stiff lineups where everyone is squinting into the sun.
Beach or Bluff: Picking Your Clearwater Look
The first question I ask Clearwater families is simple: sand or shade? Beach portraits on Clearwater Beach or Sand Key give you bright water, soft wind in the hair and that classic Florida sunset. Mainland parks like Moccasin Lake give you tall oaks, boardwalks and filtered light that is kinder to toddlers who hate bright sun.
Coachman Park sits in between. It reopened in 2023 after an $84 million makeover, with 19 acres of lawn, a promenade and an overlook on the bluff above the water. It is a great middle ground when you want water in the background but do not want sand in the diaper bag.
Whatever you choose, I plan the session in short chapters: a few posed family photos while everyone is fresh, then sibling shots, then a stretch of free play where I catch the giggles, the piggyback rides and the grandparent hugs that end up being everyone's favorites.
Sand Key Park
A 95-acre county park with a beach side and a park side, quieter than the main beach. A daily parking fee applies.
Moccasin Lake Nature Park
51 acres of trails and boardwalks under mature oaks, with free admission. Open Thursday through Sunday, so we plan around its hours.
Coachman Park
A 19-acre bayfront park on the bluff downtown, reopened in 2023 with lawns, a promenade and an overlook. Water views without the sand.
Pier 60 Park and Clearwater Beach
Wide sand facing the Gulf sunset, steps from the beach walkway. Expect crowds near the nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival.
Family Photographer Clearwater
Clearwater family photography with me comes in three styles. Outdoor sessions include one location within 30 miles of Tampa, which covers Clearwater Beach and most parks in town. Extended family portraits work well for vacation reunions when cousins fly in for a beach week. And studio portraits in New Tampa are there when you want a clean, timeless look without wind or heat.
Collections are $400 for one hour and five edited images, $650 for 90 minutes and ten images, and $1,150 for two hours and twenty images. Additional edited images are $50 each, and a 50% deposit reserves your date. Every family who books receives my styling guide, and your private online gallery is ready in two to three weeks. Curious about budget? My post on what a family photographer costs in Tampa breaks it down.
- Gulf beach sessions timed to sunset
- Shaded oak and boardwalk sessions for little ones
- Extended family groups for reunions and vacations
- Holiday portraits from October through December

Clearwater Photo Spots I Love for Families
Here are the Clearwater backdrops that work best with kids, along with the fees and rules each park publishes. I always scout timing and parking so you can walk straight from the car to the first photo without a long trek.
Pinellas County's film guidelines say handheld portrait sessions in county parks such as Sand Key do not require a permit during regular park hours, as long as we do not block paths or bring big lighting setups. The beach near Pier 60 is busy around sunset, so I often shoot a little north or south of the crowd.
Bring a towel and a change of shorts if your kids love the water. Some of my favorite beach frames happen in the last ten minutes, once everyone is a little wet, a little sandy and finally relaxed.
Clearwater Neighborhoods and How I Get There
I work with families all over town, from Clearwater Beach, Island Estates and Sand Key to Harbor Oaks, Coachman Ridge, Morningside and the Countryside area to the north. If your neighborhood has a favorite park, tell me. A familiar place often relaxes kids faster than a fancy one.
From New Tampa I usually head down I-275 and cross the Courtney Campbell Causeway on State Road 60, which becomes Gulf to Bay Boulevard. It is roughly 40 miles and about an hour without traffic. U.S. 19, McMullen-Booth Road and Drew Street handle most north-south and cross-town trips, and the Memorial Causeway takes us out to the beach.
Visiting family up the coast? I also photograph Dunedin family portraits and work as a Palm Harbor family photographer. If your crew is closer to downtown St. Pete, my St. Petersburg family photography page has bayfront options.
Clearwater by the Numbers
Clearwater is the county seat of Pinellas County and had 117,292 residents in the 2020 Census. It was first incorporated in 1891 as the Town of Clear Water Harbor and reincorporated as the City of Clearwater in 1915. Its ZIP codes include 33755, 33756 and 33759 through 33765, with Clearwater Beach in 33767.
Clearwater's calendar matters when we pick a date. The Philadelphia Phillies hold spring training at BayCare Ballpark, and Sunsets at Pier 60, a free nightly festival, fills the sand near Pier 60 Park from roughly two hours before to two hours after sunset. When a family wants quiet beach portraits, I start farther down the sand or choose Sand Key Park, a 95-acre county park that tends to feel calmer.
Sunset Timing and Holiday Sessions on the Gulf
Clearwater Beach faces west, so golden hour here is the real deal: warm light, long shadows and color in the sky. I schedule beach sessions to end around sunset so we get both bright portraits and a few dreamy silhouettes. In summer, afternoon storms can roll through, and you can always reschedule free or move to my studio.
Holiday portraits run October through December and these are my most requested Clearwater dates, because cooler evenings make the beach comfortable for everyone. Soft blues, creams and sandy neutrals look beautiful against the Gulf. Ready to plan? Book your Clearwater family session or reach out with questions.

Clearwater family photography FAQs
It works beautifully for little ones. Sand Key Park is a 95-acre Pinellas County park with both beach and grassy park areas, so toddlers can run on the lawn and then dip their toes in the Gulf. It also tends to feel quieter than Clearwater Beach. Parking is a $6 daily fee as of January 2025.
Not for a typical session. Pinellas County's film guidelines say individual and group portraits need no permit when the camera is handheld or on a tripod, paths stay clear, no large artificial lighting is used, and we visit during regular park hours. A relaxed family session at Sand Key Park fits those rules. Bigger productions apply through filmspc.com.
Moccasin Lake Nature Park is my pick for shade. It is a 51-acre city preserve with trails and boardwalks under mature oaks, and admission is free. It keeps short hours, Thursday through Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sunday from noon to 4, so we plan a late-morning or early-afternoon slot rather than golden hour.
They can. Clearwater was incorporated in 1891 as the Town of Clear Water Harbor and became the City of Clearwater on May 27, 1915. For families with long local roots, I pair a bayfront frame from the overlook at Coachman Park, on the bluff downtown, with relaxed three-generation portraits, so the harbor the town was named for sits right behind your grandparents.
We can. Sunsets at Pier 60 is a free nightly festival that runs roughly two hours before to two hours after sunset, so the sand near Pier 60 Park gets lively. I like to start a little farther down Clearwater Beach and finish as the sun drops over the Gulf, keeping the busiest stretch of sand out of the frame.
Not reliably. The Pier 60 fishing pier was damaged by Hurricanes Helene and Milton and was reported closed, so I don't plan a session around it. The open beach beside Pier 60 Park still faces west over the Gulf, which gives Clearwater Beach families the same warm sunset glow without needing the pier.
Beach-week reunions are a great fit for Clearwater Beach. I build a shot list ahead of time so grandparents get their seated portraits first, then the cousins break off for their own groupings. Sand Key Park's grassy areas give older relatives an easier surface than soft sand. Read more about extended family sessions.
Both work. Staying in Clearwater at a spot like Moccasin Lake Nature Park keeps your drive short, while studio portraits in New Tampa mean a trip of roughly 40 miles, about an hour without traffic. The studio is the better pick when you want a clean, timeless backdrop or the forecast looks unsettled.
You can reschedule free or move the session into my New Tampa studio, which is roughly 40 miles from Clearwater by way of the Courtney Campbell Causeway. I check radar with you that morning and we decide together, so nobody crosses the bay for a washed-out beach session.
It can. BayCare Ballpark is the Philadelphia Phillies spring training home, so I check the game schedule before locking in a March date and avoid sending families across town at game time. On busy weekends, Sand Key Park, a 95-acre county park that tends to feel quieter than Clearwater Beach, keeps the background calm and the drive simple.
Large Clearwater Beach reunions usually fit the two-hour collection best, since it includes 20 edited images and time for every household grouping plus the full crew at the water. Extra edited images are $50 each if you fall in love with more. The full breakdown lives on my investment page.
