Apollo Beach got its name in 1958, when Dorothy Corr, wife of developer Francis Corr, suggested it for the area's greatest asset: sunshine. Nearly seven decades later, that's still the reason I love Apollo Beach family photography. The light coming off Tampa Bay at sunset is warm, wide and endlessly flattering for families of every size.

Why the Bay Changes Everything
Most family photos in Tampa Bay are framed by trees. In Apollo Beach, the backdrop is open water and sky, which means softer shadows, cleaner backgrounds and that glowing rim light around hair at golden hour. Kids running along the sand, a toddler on a grandparent's shoulders, siblings sitting at the water's edge: these images feel like summer even in January.
The trade-off is wind and bright sun, so timing matters more here than inland. I schedule beach sessions for the hour before sunset and keep outfits simple so nothing fights the breeze.
Grandparents get a special kind of image here, too. Apollo Beach Nature Preserve has picnic tables near its beach, which means anyone who can't stand for long still gets a seat in the frame. Collections are $400 for 5 edited images and one hour, $650 for 10 images and 90 minutes, and $1,150 for 20 images and two hours. Want more than your collection includes? Apollo Beach Nature Preserve
A 63-acre county preserve on Surfside Boulevard with a 2-acre sandy beach and a 37-foot ramped observation tower over Tampa Bay. A favorite spot for golden hour family portraits by the water.
E.G. Simmons Conservation Park
Mangrove waterways and a 700-foot beach about three miles north of Ruskin. Entry is $2 per vehicle, and the open shoreline works beautifully for sunset silhouettes.
Little Manatee River State Park
Over 2,400 acres along the Little Manatee River in Wimauma, with shaded riverside trails. Entry is $5 per vehicle, and the shade is welcome on warm afternoons.
Alafia Scrub Nature Preserve
A short drive north in Riverview, with a scenic overlook of the Alafia River and quiet loop trails. Great for families who want water views without sand.
Shoreline and Mangrove Spots Near Apollo Beach
The Apollo Beach area has a handful of public waterfront spots that work beautifully for family photos in Apollo Beach, from a small county beach with a tower view to mangrove-lined parks a few minutes south in Ruskin and quiet river trails inland. I choose based on your kids' ages and how much sand you're willing to bring home.
Two notes worth knowing. Apollo Beach Nature Preserve is open 8 a.m. to sunset and the county does not allow special events or vendors there. And under Hillsborough County's film guidelines, a permit is waived in county parks only for groups of five or fewer, photographer included, with no props, so larger family groups need a permit for outdoor locations.
MiraBay, Waterset and the Roads In
Apollo Beach is a census-designated place in Hillsborough County with 26,002 residents at the 2020 census, served by ZIP code 33572. Its neighborhoods range from the original canal streets of Golf & Sea and Symphony Isles to newer communities like MiraBay, Waterset, Andalucia, Bimini Bay, Harbour Isles and Covington Park.
U.S. 41 crosses the middle of the community, and I-75 runs along its eastern edge at Exit 246, Big Bend Road. Apollo Beach Boulevard and Dickman Road lead to the bay. From my New Tampa studio, the drive is roughly 40 to 45 minutes down I-75, so I plan session times with the evening rush in mind.

Canals, Bay Light and a Power Plant on the Horizon
Apollo Beach is laced with an estimated 55 miles of canals leading out to Tampa Bay, so open water sits behind almost any backdrop we choose. Francis Corr, a retired Michigan businessman, bought the land in 1957 and started with 50 homes; his son Thomas later donated land for parks and schools.
Across the water, the Big Bend Power Station is a fixture of the skyline, so on bayfront frames I either angle your family to keep it out of view or let it sit softly in the distance as a true Apollo Beach landmark. The town sits about 17 miles south of Tampa, close enough that an evening session fits easily after school.
These details give your gallery a sense of place. A photo taken on the shore your kids know by heart, or on the canal dock behind your house, means more than a generic backdrop ever could, and it's exactly the kind of story I look for when choosing where to shoot.

From New Tampa the drive runs approximately 40 to 45 minutes, roughly 40 miles, depending on traffic, so I suggest leaving early enough to arrive about 15 minutes before we start, change shoes and let the kids settle before the light turns gold.
Yes, a home dock works well as your one outdoor location. Apollo Beach has an estimated 55 miles of canals leading to Tampa Bay, so if your backyard opens onto water in Symphony Isles, Bimini Bay or MiraBay, we can use it. We'll pick a time when the sun is low and the light on the water is soft.
