Dunedin Family Photographer

A small Gulf town with a Scottish streak, shaded nature trails and sunsets over St. Joseph Sound. Easygoing family portraits in Dunedin.

Dunedin family photographer

Dunedin feels like a small town that kept its sense of humor. Bagpipes in spring, a downtown you can walk end to end, and an island state park just over the causeway. I'm Mallary Denson, a Tampa family photographer with a studio in New Tampa, and Dunedin is a favorite spot for families who want their portraits to feel unhurried and a little bit wild around the edges.

My approach is simple. We start with a few classic family photos while shirts are still tucked in, then I let the kids lead. Sibling races on the boardwalk, a grandparent carrying the youngest on their shoulders, a quiet hug at the water. Those candid frames are what families treasure years later.

Small-Town Dunedin, Big Backdrops

What I love about Dunedin is how much variety fits into one compact city. Within a few minutes you can go from shaded nature trails to a marina full of sailboats to a Gulf beach lined with slash pines. That means we can plan a session that matches your family, whether that is toddlers who need shade and short walks or teens who want something that feels more editorial.

Dunedin also has a strong local identity. The city was named after Edinburgh, keeps a sister-city tie with Stirling, Scotland, and hosts the Dunedin Highland Games every spring. If your family has its own traditions, tartan or otherwise, I love working those details into your portraits.

Families here also tend to want photos that look like their weekends. A walk to the marina, a bike ride on the trail, an afternoon at the beach. I build sessions around those everyday rituals, so your gallery feels like Dunedin and like you, not like a generic backdrop you could find anywhere.

Hammock Park

A 90-acre city nature park with about five miles of trails, and a butterfly garden that adds color behind little ones. Soft shade for toddlers.

Edgewater Park and Dunedin Marina

A shaded waterfront park beside the marina, looking west over St. Joseph Sound. Sailboat masts and sunset color in one frame.

Honeymoon Island State Park

More than 2,800 acres with Gulf beaches and the 2.5-mile Osprey Trail through slash pines. A state park entry fee applies per vehicle.

Downtown Main Street and the Pinellas Trail

The Pinellas Trail runs right through downtown. A relaxed, walkable backdrop for families who want a little town character.

Family Photographer Dunedin

As a family photographer in Dunedin, I offer three session types. Outdoor family sessions include one location within 30 miles of Tampa, and Dunedin's parks fit comfortably inside that. Extended family sessions are ideal when grandparents winter here and the whole crew visits at once. My studio portraits in New Tampa are always available if the forecast is uncooperative.

Collections are $400 for five edited images and one hour, $650 for ten images and 90 minutes, and $1,150 for twenty images and two hours. Extra edited images are $50 each, and a 50% deposit secures your date. Every booked family gets my styling guide, and your private online gallery is ready in two to three weeks. If you are wondering how long to plan for, my post on how long a family photo session takes helps you pick the right collection.

  • Playful, candid sessions for young kids
  • Calm pacing and seating for grandparents
  • Big group posing for extended family
  • Holiday portraits October through December

Dunedin Parks and Waterfronts for Family Photos

These are the Dunedin locations I reach for most often with families, each with a different feel. I factor in your kids' ages, nap times and how much walking everyone can handle, then choose the spot that fits.

Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island are state parks, so they charge entry fees and follow state park rules. I confirm current photography guidelines with the park before we book an island date, so there are no surprises when we arrive.

For the easiest day with little kids, I usually suggest Hammock Park or Edgewater Park. Parking is close, the walks are short, and there is shade or open water close by, so we can change backdrops without a long walk.

Neighborhoods and the Drive to Dunedin

I photograph families across Dunedin, from Downtown Dunedin and Marina Place to Fairway Estates, Dunedin Isles, Baywood Shores, Scotsdale and St. Andrews Links. If you are near Hammock Park or the Pinellas Trail, we can often keep travel to a few minutes.

From New Tampa I head west on Tampa Road through Oldsmar, then follow Curlew Road, State Road 586, into Dunedin. It is roughly 31 to 35 miles and close to an hour depending on traffic. Main Street, which carries State Road 580, runs through downtown, Alternate U.S. 19 hugs the water along Edgewater Drive, and Causeway Boulevard takes us out to Honeymoon Island.

Dunedin sits between a few of my other favorite areas. I am also a Palm Harbor family photographer, I photograph family photos in Clearwater, and I cover Safety Harbor family portraits just a short drive east.

Dunedin History and Local Facts

Dunedin was incorporated as a town in 1899 and became a city in 1926. The 2020 Census counted 36,068 residents, and most of the city shares one ZIP code, 34698. It is part of Pinellas County, on St. Joseph Sound along the Gulf coast.

The Toronto Blue Jays have held spring training in Dunedin since 1977, now at TD Ballpark, so I keep March sessions away from the ballpark on game days. The Highland Games have run every year since 1967, and the 2026 games took place at Highlander Park in April, a weekend I plan around for nearby sessions. Honeymoon Island earned its name after 1939, when a New York advertising executive built palm-thatched honeymoon cottages there.

Best Light and Seasons for Dunedin Family Portraits

Dunedin's waterfront faces west across St. Joseph Sound, so golden hour comes with sunsets over the water. Under the oaks at Hammock Park, the light stays soft much of the day, which makes it a smart choice for a morning session with little ones who melt down by late afternoon. In winter the sun sets earlier, so evening sessions wrap up before dinner, perfect for early bedtimes.

Holiday portraits run October through December, and cooler evenings make the island and the marina pleasant for everyone. Summer storms pop up fast, so if the weather turns you can reschedule free or move into the studio. Dunedin family photography FAQs

Mostly, yes. Hammock Park is a 90-acre city nature park with about five miles of trails, so we can always find a pocket of tree cover for soft, even light on faces. The butterfly garden adds color, and its blooms make a soft, natural frame for sibling close-ups.

Yes, Honeymoon Island State Park charges a per-vehicle entry fee at the gate. I have not found an official source on photography permits for portrait sessions there, so I suggest a quick call to the park before we lock in the date. Once inside, more than 2,800 acres give us Gulf beach and pine-lined trails.

There is. In 1939 Clinton Washburn bought the north half of what was then Hog Island and built about 50 palm-thatched honeymoon cottages, which opened March 8, 1940. Dunedin families celebrating a vow renewal or a milestone anniversary love knowing that history while we photograph everyone on the Gulf beach.

Absolutely. Dunedin has been the Toronto Blue Jays' spring training home since 1977, at TD Ballpark, so matching jerseys and caps make a playful local touch. We keep the main portraits at a quieter spot like Hammock Park, so the jerseys and caps carry the theme without a stadium crowd in the background.

The 2.5-mile Osprey Trail at Honeymoon Island State Park runs through slash pine flatwoods, so earthy greens, creams and soft blues blend with the pines. Choose closed-toe shoes for the walk in and skip long, dragging hems. Every booked family gets my styling guide, and my what to wear guide has more ideas for Honeymoon Island State Park.

Edgewater Park at the Dunedin Marina is a shaded waterfront park, which matters for grandparents who tire in the sun. I organize groupings so older relatives go first, then rest in the shade while cousins and siblings take their turns facing St. Joseph Sound.

Yes. Dunedin is a Pinellas County city of 36,068 people (2020 Census), and its main residential ZIP is 34698, with 34697 used for PO boxes. Whether you are in Fairway Estates, Baywood Shores or Scotsdale, Hammock Park and the downtown waterfront make easy local backdrops.

Bikes make a fun, active story. The Pinellas Trail runs right through downtown Dunedin, so we can photograph you rolling along the trail, then park the bikes for relaxed portraits on Main Street. We keep it to a short stretch so little riders still have energy for smiles.

Holiday sessions run October through December, so Dunedin families aiming for printed cards should reserve by early fall. We can go outdoors at Hammock Park for a natural look, or come to my New Tampa studio, roughly 31 to 35 miles away, for a classic backdrop. Here is how far ahead to book.

For a Dunedin family of five, the 10-image collection over 90 minutes leaves room for the full group, each child alone and the parents together. Extra edited images are $50 each if you want more after seeing your Hammock Park photos. Every detail is on my investment page.
