Carrollwood Family Photographer
Lake views, shady trails and a neighborhood built for families since 1959. Carrollwood family portraits that feel easy and true to you.

Carrollwood has always been a family neighborhood. Developer Matt Jetton laid out the first homes beside Lake Carroll in 1959 as a quieter alternative to South Tampa, and more than six decades later the curving streets are still full of bikes, strollers and backyard birthday parties. As a Tampa family photographer, I love bringing that same easygoing spirit into Carrollwood family photos.
I'm Mallary Denson, the photographer behind Captured by Mallary Photography, a Black woman-owned studio based in New Tampa. Families have given me 5.0 stars in 143 Google reviews. I was named Best Family Photographer in Tampa for 2026 by 10 Best Photographers and No. 1 Family Photographer in Tampa for 2027 by Best Tampa Photographers, and I bring that experience to every session, whether it's two parents and a baby or twenty relatives in coordinated colors.
Sessions Built Around Carrollwood Weekends
Carrollwood weekends tend to run on a schedule: school pickups, soccer at the park, dinner with the grandparents. I plan family sessions to fit in rather than take over, usually an hour or so in the late afternoon, close to home, with open lawn nearby so kids can move between poses.
That approach makes candid moments much easier to catch. A toddler chasing bubbles across the grass, an older brother giving a piggyback ride, grandparents laughing at something off-camera. Those are the frames families tell me they love most, and they happen when everyone is comfortable.
I also keep posing light. I'll give your family a few simple prompts, like walking toward me holding hands or squeezing in for a group hug, then step back and let the moment play out. Little kids respond much better to games than instructions, and teenagers relax when they realize nobody is going to make them say cheese.

Parks and Lakes for Carrollwood Family Portraits
Carrollwood family photography leans toward parks and water. The neighborhood grew up around Lake Carroll, though its shoreline beach is private to residents, so I bring families to public spaces with similar views and plenty of shade. Carrollwood Village Park sits right in the middle of the community, and Lake Park is a short drive north up Dale Mabry Highway.
Lake Park charges $2 per vehicle, so bring a couple of dollars. Its wooded paths and lakeshore give a more rustic feel than the manicured lawns of Carrollwood Village Park, which makes the two a nice pairing if you book the 90-minute collection and want variety in your gallery. Both are easy to reach from any part of the neighborhood.
Carrollwood Village Park
About 50 acres with a pond, open lawn and paved trail. Open 7 am to 9 pm, so evening golden hour fits easily.
Lake Park
589 acres with five lakes, cypress swamp and pine flatwoods off North Dale Mabry Highway. Entry is $2 per vehicle.
Carrollwood Cultural Center
A community arts campus on Casey Road created from a former church, with clean lines for a more polished family look.
My New Tampa studio
An indoor option for babies, grandparents and rainy days, about 20 to 30 minutes from Carrollwood.
Carrollwood Village, Carrollwood Springs and Nearby
I photograph families throughout Carrollwood's ZIP codes, 33618 and 33624. That includes Original Carrollwood around Lake Carroll, Phase One Carrollwood Village, Carrollwood Springs, Carrollwood Meadows and the 18 villages of The Plantation of Carrollwood, including Brightside Village.
The main routes are Dale Mabry Highway, Gunn Highway, Ehrlich Road, Turner Road, Busch Boulevard, Fletcher Avenue and the Veterans Expressway. From my New Tampa studio the drive is roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and every Carrollwood location falls well inside the 30 miles included with outdoor sessions. Families just north often book me as a Lutz family photographer, and I also cover Land O' Lakes, family photos in New Tampa and South Tampa family portraits.
Lake Carroll, Award Winners and a Park With a Past
Carrollwood's history is a big part of its charm. Matt Jetton founded it in 1959 beside spring-fed Lake Carroll, and in 1961 the National Association of Home Builders named it U.S. Subdivision of the Year. Original Carrollwood still has 925 homes on streets that follow the curves of the lake, and it has been a special taxing district since 1969. Jetton launched Carrollwood Village to the northwest around 1970.
The Carrollwood CDP counted 34,352 residents in the 2020 Census. Carrollwood Village Park, now one of the busiest parks in the county with over a million visits a year, was once the site of the Dale Mabry Wastewater Treatment Plant before Hillsborough County transformed it into open lawns, trails and a pond.
Best Light and Seasons in Carrollwood
Carrollwood's mature oaks are a gift for family portraits. In the hour before sunset, they filter the light into a warm, even glow that flatters every skin tone and keeps kids from squinting. I avoid midday sessions entirely in summer, and during storm season I watch the radar closely. If rain wins, you can reschedule free or move into the studio.
Holiday portraits run October through December, and that's when Carrollwood calendars fill up fastest. Spring is a close second, with mild mornings and fresh green leaves that look beautiful behind kids in light colors. For outfit advice, my what to wear for family pictures in Tampa guide pairs well with the styling guide every booked family receives. When you're ready, reserve your Carrollwood family session.

Carrollwood family photography FAQs
Yes, and it is my favorite part of the park for little ones. Carrollwood Village Park sits on about 50 acres with a pond, open lawn and paved trail, so a toddler can wander the grass while the water fills the background. More than 1 million people visit each year, so a weekday or early morning slot keeps the frame clear.
Original Carrollwood was founded by Matt Jetton in 1959 beside spring-fed Lake Carroll, and its 925 homes sit on curving streets that follow the shoreline. Since the lakefront is mostly residential, we photograph from public sidewalks and streets only. The neighborhood was named U.S. Subdivision of the Year in 1961, and the older trees show it.
Yes. Lake Park, also called Lake Conservation Park, covers 589 acres with five lakes, cypress swamp, pine flatwoods and hardwood hammock, so one visit gives several looks. Entry is $2 per vehicle. Tampa BMX Raceway has run there since 1974, which is a fun bonus for older kids who want to watch after their photos.
For families in Carrollwood Meadows, The Plantation of Carrollwood, Carrollwood Springs or Brightside Village, a local park keeps the drive short. Carrollwood Village itself launched around 1970, and its mature landscaping makes nearby parks feel established and green. For families off Gunn Highway or Ehrlich Road, a session at Carrollwood Village Park keeps the drive to just a few minutes.
It works nicely for candid walking frames. The Upper Tampa Bay Trail is paved with tree cover, so kids can hold hands and stroll toward the camera while the canopy softens the light. It suits Carrollwood families who want movement rather than stiff poses. We pause between walks for a few posed groupings.
Water and greenery pair well with soft blues, sage, cream and warm tan. Avoid big logos and neon, which pull attention from faces. Carrollwood Village Park's pond and Lake Park's five lakes both reflect light, so lighter tones glow at golden hour. My post on what to wear for family pictures has full outfit ideas.
Yes. For reunions I like Lake Park, where 589 acres give room to stage three generations without crowds. It is a short drive for Carrollwood families. My extended family sessions allow extra time for grandparents, cousins and every combination you want photographed.
Yes. Outdoor sessions include one location within 30 miles of Tampa, and Carrollwood is well inside that, about 12 to 15 miles from my New Tampa studio, approximately 20 to 30 minutes by car. Pricing for each collection is on my family photo investment page, and a 50% deposit holds your date.
Summer storms in Hillsborough County often pop up in the afternoon. If the weather turns before or during your session, you can reschedule for free or move into my New Tampa studio. Carrollwood Village Park is open 7 am to 9 pm, so a morning reschedule is easy to set up.
Plenty. Carrollwood spans two ZIP codes, 33618 and 33624, and I photograph families in both. The Carrollwood CDP counted 34,352 residents in the 2020 Census, including Carrollwood Village, and families there are a short drive from most of my favorite parks. Main roads like Dale Mabry Highway, Busch Boulevard and Fletcher Avenue keep every option within easy reach.
Yes. Carrollwood Village Park stays open until 9 pm, so a session during the last hour before sunset fits even busy school schedules. The park was built on the former Dale Mabry Wastewater Treatment Plant site, and today its pond and open lawn catch warm evening light beautifully.
