Brandon has been a place families move to on purpose for a long time. By the early 1960s, about 8,000 people lived here and roughly one new family arrived every single day. Today the census counts 114,626 residents across ZIPs 33508 through 33511, and a lot of them are the young parents, busy siblings and visiting grandparents I photograph every week. I'm Mallary Denson, a Tampa family photographer working from my studio in New Tampa, and Brandon is one of my favorite drives east.

Spring is the second busy stretch here. The light softens, the oaks along Bloomingdale Avenue fill in, and it's the season most parents want updated photos of the kids before summer camp. Either season works; the earlier you book, the more choice you have.

Every session starts with a short call. We talk about who's coming, the ages of the kids, whether grandparents are joining, and what you want to hang on the wall. From there I suggest a location and a time of day that suits naps, school pickup and the light. Brandon Portrait Spots Worth the Short Drive

Brandon itself is mostly suburban, so the best Brandon family photography backdrops are a mix of small neighborhood parks and the conservation lands just south toward the Alafia River. I pick based on your kids' ages and how much walking they'll tolerate. The cards below are the places I recommend most often for families coming from Brandon.

One practical note: Hillsborough County's film guidelines waive the permit in county parks and conservation areas only when the whole group, photographer included, is five people or fewer with no props. Larger groups need a permit, which matters for big reunions and is part of why some extended families prefer the studio.

Getting Around: Neighborhoods, Roads and Timing

Brandon sits about 11 miles east of downtown Tampa, and from my New Tampa studio it's roughly a 30-minute drive down I-75, give or take traffic. Families from Brandon Hills, Kensington Estates, Limona or Barrington Oaks East usually reach the studio by heading north on I-75 or cutting over to I-4, which runs about four miles north of town.

For outdoor sessions on weekday evenings, I plan around State Road 60 and the Selmon Expressway rush. Brandon Parkway, which links Lumsden Road, Providence Road and Town Center Boulevard, is often the calmer way to reach the trail and keeps everyone's patience intact before the first photo.

John Brandon arrived from Mississippi in 1857, and the town was formally platted and named for him in 1890. By the early 1960s Brandon had about 8,000 residents, with an estimated one new family moving in every day. More recently, the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds settled into a permanent home on SR 60 in 2011 and 2012.

Light, Heat and What to Wear in East Hillsborough

From June through September, I schedule outdoor sessions for the last hour before sunset. The heat breaks, the light turns gold, and kids stay happier. In the cooler months we have a little more flexibility, though golden hour is still the most flattering light for skin and for those long oak shadows.

For outfits, think in a palette rather than matching shirts. Soft greens and creams look lovely against moss and trees; deeper rust and navy work well for fall holiday sessions.
