Temple Terrace Family Photographer
A 1920s river town shaded by oaks, made for family portraits that feel classic, warm and a little bit storybook.

Temple Terrace doesn't look like the rest of Tampa, and that's exactly why I love photographing families here. Stucco homes with tile roofs, sand live oaks arching over the streets, the Hillsborough River curling around the city's edge. As a Tampa family photographer whose studio is about 15 to 20 minutes north in New Tampa, I come down for Temple Terrace family photos whenever a family wants that timeless, old-Florida feel.
I'm Mallary Denson of Captured by Mallary Photography, a Black woman-owned studio with 5.0 stars across 143 Google reviews. I was named Best Family Photographer in Tampa for 2026 by 10 Best Photographers and No. 1 Family Photographer in Tampa for 2027 by Best Tampa Photographers. Whether it's your first session with a toddler or a reunion with three generations, I'll guide you through every step.
Old Florida Charm for Every Generation
Temple Terrace was planned in the 1920s as one of the first Mediterranean Revival golf course communities in the United States, and much of that character survives. For Temple Terrace family photography, it means warm stucco, arched doorways and huge trees that feel right for every age group. Grandparents tend to love the classic look, and kids love that there's always somewhere to explore.
I see these sessions as heirloom portraits. The goal is images that will still feel right on the wall in twenty years, so I favor soft color palettes, natural posing and candid interaction over trendy props. I'll also ask about your family traditions beforehand, like a favorite blanket, a grandmother's quilt or a team jersey, so the details in your photos feel personal. A grandfather reading to his granddaughter under an oak tells more of your story than any staged pose ever could.

Riverbanks, Gazebos and Boardwalks
Temple Terrace's parks are full of shade, which is a big deal for Florida family portraits. The Hillsborough River runs along the city's eastern and southern edges, and its banks are lined with cypress and oak. That gives us dappled, forgiving light even later in the afternoon.
Riverhills Park even carries a bit of Spanish colonial history. A historic marker there notes that Don Francisco Maria Celi of the Spanish Royal Fleet traveled up the Hillsborough River to this spot searching for pine trees to use as ship masts. Older kids tend to love that story, and it's a nice detail to share when you hang the print.
Lettuce Lake Park charges $2 per vehicle and accepts cash only, and parts of its boardwalk have been under reconstruction, so I check access before we plan around it. For more locations around the region, read my best places for family pictures in Tampa guide.
Getting Around Temple Terrace
Temple Terrace is its own incorporated city, covering about 7.8 square miles with ZIP codes 33617 and 33637. I photograph families from Temple Terrace Estates and the homes along Riverhills Drive, plus Carriage Hills, Terrace River, Hidden Oaks, Temple Terrace Gardens and Temple Terrace Heights.
The main routes are 56th Street, Busch Boulevard, Fowler Avenue, Bullard Parkway and Fletcher Avenue, with I-75 just outside the city limits. That makes the drive from my New Tampa studio about 15 to 20 minutes, comfortably inside the 30 miles included with outdoor sessions. I also work as a New Tampa family photographer, and families to the east often book family portraits in Brandon or Valrico. To the north, I photograph families in Wesley Chapel.
A City Named for an Orange
Temple Terrace was incorporated on May 28, 1925, and named for the Temple orange, a then-new hybrid. Around 5,000 acres were planted with it, the largest citrus grove in the world at the time. Before that, the land was part of Bertha Palmer's 19,000-acre Riverhills game preserve.
The Tom Bendelow golf course saw its first play in 1922 and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Florida College, founded in 1946, now uses the original 1922 clubhouse, Sutton Hall. The city counted 26,690 residents in the 2020 Census, and its sand live oaks helped earn it Tree City USA status.
Light, Seasons and Winter Wonderland
Under Temple Terrace's oak canopy, the best family photo light comes in the last hour before sunset, when sun slips sideways through the branches. In summer, I schedule evenings only and keep an eye on storms. If weather doesn't cooperate, you can reschedule free or move into the studio. Spring is another favorite season here, when new leaves on the oaks turn the canopy bright green and mornings are still cool enough for long sleeves and layered outfits.
Fall and winter are especially sweet here. Holiday portraits run October through December, and each year the city transforms Woodmont Park for its Winter Wonderland celebration, so I plan Woodmont Park sessions around that weekend. Spots fill quickly, so book your Temple Terrace family session early and check my guide to how long a family session takes to plan your day.

Temple Terrace family photography FAQs
Woodmont Park at 407 Woodmont Avenue is one of the prettiest spots in Temple Terrace, with a gazebo that frames a family group nicely. It is popular for weddings, so it feels classic and polished. Late afternoon light through the trees works especially well for portraits with grandparents seated on the gazebo steps.
Woodmont Park hosts the city's annual Winter Wonderland holiday celebration, so the park has a festive feel in late fall. Holiday portraits run October through December, and I recommend booking a date before or after the event so we are not working around crowds. Velvet, plaid and cream knits fit the setting perfectly.
Riverhills Park covers 34.45 acres on the Hillsborough River, with a riverfront boardwalk, cypress and oaks, so active kids have room to move between backdrops. We start with a few posed groupings under the trees, then let them run along the river while I photograph candid moments. It is an easy park for families of every size.
Yes, bring a couple of dollar bills. The park at 6920 E. Fletcher Avenue charges two dollars per vehicle and takes cash only. Its long boardwalk winds through cypress and hardwood floodplain, which gives family portraits an Old Florida look, though some sections and the tower are being rebuilt. If access is limited that week, Riverhills Park makes a good swap.
Lean into the history. Temple Terrace was named for the Temple orange, and about 5,000 acres were once planted with it, the largest citrus grove in the world at the time. Warm citrus tones like tangerine, coral and gold look beautiful against riverfront greenery. Pair them with cream or denim so faces stay the focus.
Temple Terrace was planned in the 1920s as one of the first Mediterranean Revival golf course communities in the U.S. and incorporated on May 28, 1925. Its golf course was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. We can work that history into your session with public streets and parks, and classic, timeless outfits.
Woodmont Park is the easiest choice. The gazebo gives a natural seated spot, and we can capture three generations without long walks. For a bigger reunion, my extended family sessions add time for every grouping. It is close for families anywhere in Temple Terrace, including Carriage Hills and Temple Terrace Estates.
Yes. Temple Terrace is approximately 15 to 20 minutes from my New Tampa studio, about 10 miles, so it falls well within the one included location within 30 miles of Tampa. You can compare collections on my family session pricing page.
Afternoon storms often build in Temple Terrace in summer, so I keep an eye on the forecast. If the weather turns, you can reschedule for free or move into my New Tampa studio, which is about 10 miles away. Booking a morning slot at Riverhills Park can help you avoid the typical afternoon pattern.
Yes, Temple Terrace is an incorporated city in Hillsborough County with 26,690 residents in the 2020 Census and an estimated 27,275 in 2024. I photograph families across both ZIP codes, 33617 and 33637, and Fowler Avenue and 56th Street make it simple to reach parks across town.
Riverhills Park is the natural pick. Temple Terrace was once part of Bertha Palmer's 19,000-acre Riverhills game preserve, and the park keeps that wild river feel today. It sits on the Hillsborough River for riverfront portraits, and its boardwalk under cypress and oak gives soft shade on bright days.
