Most New Tampa families get to choose between two very different experiences without a long drive. A studio portrait session gives you clean backgrounds, controlled light and air conditioning, which is a gift in August. An outdoor family session takes us into the pine flatwoods and cypress wetlands that still surround the suburbs here.

Pines, Boardwalks and River Trails Near New Tampa
New Tampa's best portrait settings are mostly natural. Tall slash pines, saw palmetto, cypress domes and the Hillsborough River give a soft, layered look that suits family photography with kids of every age. New Tampa Nature Park is a City of Tampa park, so paid portrait sessions there fall under the city's commercial photography permit process, so we confirm what the location needs before we plan around it.
Flatwoods Park and Morris Bridge Park are part of the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve, which protects about 13 miles of the river. That means real wilderness close to the suburbs, with wading birds, cypress knees and tall pines in the background of your family photos instead of rooftops and parking lots.

Getting around is easy with I-75, I-275, Cross Creek Boulevard, New Tampa Boulevard and Morris Bridge Road all close by. Most of these neighborhoods are 15 minutes or less from my studio. How New Tampa Grew Up
New Tampa feels established now, but it's young. The City of Tampa annexed about 24 square miles here in 1988, and the population jumped from 7,145 in 1990 to 26,634 in 2000, a 272.7% increase in a single decade. Today ZIP code 33647 alone counted 69,457 residents in the 2020 Census.
Tampa Palms was named the top master planned community in the country for 1987 by the National Association of Home Builders, and its 120-foot-wide boulevard is still one of the area's signature drives. Hunter's Green was fully established in 1991. Many of the families I meet moved here for the schools and parks, and those years of growing up are exactly what family portraits are meant to hold onto.
Seasons and Light in North Tampa
Golden hour in New Tampa is especially pretty in the flatwoods, where the low sun shines through pine trunks and leaves long, warm shadows. From June through September I schedule outdoor sessions in the last hour before sunset to avoid the midday heat, and I keep an eye on afternoon storms. If weather turns, you can reschedule for free or move straight into the studio, which is only minutes away.
Holiday portraits run October through December and are the busiest season of the year. Because outdoor spots here are mostly wooded, fall sessions pair well with warm neutrals, rust and deep green. Yes, it is a great fit for little ones. New Tampa Nature Park covers 122 acres, with an elevated boardwalk over wetland and a marsh walk that give toddlers short, easy paths between frames. The park also connects to the county's Flatwoods Park trail system, so we can add a short walk for variety if energy holds up.
Bikes make a fun, candid prop. Flatwoods Park has a 7-mile paved loop through pine flatwoods, so we can photograph kids pedaling toward the camera with long open sightlines behind them. I suggest late afternoon, when light slants through the pines and the pavement has cooled a bit. Helmets in coordinating colors look great too.
It is a memorable backdrop, with rapids below and shaded river trails close by. Entry is $6 per vehicle, and Florida State Parks require a contract for commercial photography that would disrupt park operations or resources, so we keep the session small and out of the way of other visitors at Hillsborough River State Park.
