The best places to take family photos in downtown Tampa
The best places to take family photos in downtown Tampa include Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the 2.6-mile Tampa Riverwalk along the Hillsborough River, Plant Hall's silver minarets at the University of Tampa, and Armature Works in Tampa Heights. Each offers a different look, from open lawn to historic brick and river views.
Downtown is a great fit for families who want something a little more modern or architectural than a beach or wooded park. The river ties everything together, so one session can include water, skyline and greenery without a long drive between backdrops.
Below is how each location photographs, with the practical details that actually affect your session.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park
Curtis Hixon is the big open lawn on the east bank of the Hillsborough River, in the heart of downtown. The current park opened in 2010 after a redesign meant to open views from Ashley Drive to the river. Its lawn slopes toward the water in gentle terraces, which gives kids room to run and gives me natural levels for group shots.
The best part for portraits is the view across the river to the University of Tampa's minarets. With the right angle, you get green lawn in front and that historic skyline behind. The park also has fountains, a playground and splash pads, so it is easy to give little ones a break.
According to the City of Tampa, the park is open from 7 am to 10 pm. It hosts concerts and festivals through the year, so we check the event calendar before choosing a date.
The sloped lawn is one of my favorite features for large groups. Standing families a step or two apart on the slope lets every face show clearly, without the back row hiding behind taller relatives.
The Tampa Riverwalk
The Tampa Riverwalk is a 2.6-mile path that runs from the Channel District, around the mouth of the Hillsborough River and north along the river to Tampa Heights. It links Curtis Hixon, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children's Museum, the Tampa Bay History Center and Water Works Park.
For family photos, the Riverwalk works beautifully as a walking session. Railings and the water create strong lines, bridges frame the background and the river reflects soft light near sunset. The path became one continuous route in 2014 and reached Water Works Park in 2016, so it is easy to move between two or three looks in one hour.
Because it is a busy public path, I keep families to the side so walkers and cyclists can pass. Early evening on a weekday is usually calmer than a weekend afternoon.
The Riverwalk also passes the Tampa Bay History Center and the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, so the background changes from block to block, from museum glass to the river and bridges.
Plant Hall at the University of Tampa
Plant Hall is the former Tampa Bay Hotel, built in 1891, with 13 silver minarets and Moorish arches that make it one of the most recognizable buildings in Florida. It sits just across the river from downtown and gives family portraits a storybook, almost travel-photo feel.
The University of Tampa has a photo and video policy. Shoots may not interfere with campus functions or use private areas, and location agreements may be required, with questions directed to the Office of Marketing and Communications. Classes, graduations and events take priority, so this spot needs extra planning.
If Plant Hall is a must for your family, we can still feature the minarets from across the river at Curtis Hixon, which gives you that iconic backdrop with a little more breathing room.
Armature Works and Sparkman Wharf
Armature Works sits on the Hillsborough River in Tampa Heights, north of downtown. The building opened in 1912 as the Tampa Electric Company streetcar barn and was designated a historic landmark in 2004. Today it is a public market and event space, and its brick facade and riverfront setting give portraits a warm, urban look.
Sparkman Wharf, in the Channel District at the east end of the Riverwalk, mixes a former shipping warehouse with a recreational lawn and waterfront views. It reads more modern and casual.
Both are privately operated destinations, and I could not find a published photography policy for either. If one of these is your dream backdrop, it is worth contacting the venue before your session, and choosing a quieter time so we are not working around crowds.
Permits and rules for downtown photo sessions
This is where downtown differs from a quiet neighborhood park. Curtis Hixon is part of the City of Tampa parks system, and the city's Commercial Filming Policy defines still photography for commercial portrait settings as a filming activity, directing users to the Tampa Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission for a permit.
Rules and fees change, so check the current policy for any city park before your date. Private venues set their own rules, and the University of Tampa has its own policy. Planning this early keeps session day simple.
- City of Tampa parks: Commercial Filming Policy, permits through the Tampa Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission
- University of Tampa: campus photo and video policy, contact Marketing and Communications
- Armature Works and Sparkman Wharf: privately operated, ask the venue directly
Building an easy downtown route
The best downtown sessions keep walking short. Little legs and grandparents both do better when the next backdrop is a few minutes away, not across town.
A natural route starts on the lawn at Curtis Hixon for the full family portrait, then moves onto the Riverwalk for walking shots with the water and bridges, ending at the river's edge with the University of Tampa minarets behind you as the sun drops. Plant Hall and Armature Works each need their own planning, so I usually treat them as a separate choice rather than a stop on the same walk.
An outdoor family session includes one location within 30 miles of Tampa, and downtown is well within that range. Tell me which look you love most, and we will build the session around it.
Timing, light and heat downtown
Downtown buildings create shade earlier than open parks do, which can be a gift in summer. The hour before sunset gives warm light on the river and softer shadows between towers. Mornings are calmer and cooler, and a good choice for families with toddlers.
From late May through early October, afternoon storms are common, so I watch the forecast closely. If weather turns, you can reschedule free or move into the studio. Wear shoes you can walk in, since a downtown session usually covers a few blocks.
As a Tampa family photographer, I help families choose between downtown, the bay and quieter parks. If you love water views, South Tampa family photos along Bayshore Boulevard are close by. Families from Temple Terrace or Brandon family portraits often find downtown an easy drive. Frequently asked questions
Parts of the Riverwalk pass through City of Tampa parks such as Curtis Hixon, and the city's Commercial Filming Policy treats paid portrait sessions in its parks as commercial filming handled through the Tampa Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission. Whether a given stretch of the Riverwalk falls under that policy isn't spelled out, so check the current rules before planning a professional session there.
The hour before sunset gives warm light on the Hillsborough River, while early mornings are cooler and quieter. Weekdays are usually calmer than weekends, when events and crowds fill Curtis Hixon and the Riverwalk. In summer, earlier times help families avoid late-afternoon storms.
Yes, if they are close together. Curtis Hixon and the Riverwalk connect directly, so moving between them is easy. Outdoor sessions include one location within 30 miles of Tampa, so tell me which spots you love and we will plan the route together. Longer collections give more time to explore.
It can be. Curtis Hixon has open lawn, a playground and splash pads, which help with breaks. The Riverwalk is flat and stroller friendly. Busy weekends can distract little ones, so a weekday morning or early evening usually works best for toddlers.
City backdrops pair well with slightly polished outfits: denim, linen, knits and structured dresses in mid-tones like navy, olive, rust or cream. Avoid colors that match a brick wall exactly, or you can blend in. Comfortable shoes matter, since downtown sessions usually include some walking.
If storms roll in, you can reschedule your session free, or move it into my New Tampa studio. Summer storms in Tampa often build in the late afternoon, so having that backup keeps your plans flexible without losing your date.
